“Much better than what I expected”
Don't be discouraged by the negative reviews about hotels/hostels in Chungking Mansion. But I am only making this review for the rooms from Comfort Guest House E. Honestly, based on reviews, I expected something worse. Check in is quick. We got there around 11am, went straight to the reception. A Hong Kong local processed our check in but she was with a Filipino. Check in is around 2pm but we were allowed to leave our luggage in the room while they are cleaning it. The caretaker is also a Filipino. The room size is what you expected. It is really small. Just enough for a double bed, bathroom, and and a narrow space. We are 2 male, both a bit overweight at 80-90kg, 5'6" in height but we really felt it was suffocating. It was just enough for the 2 of us. The bed is on the harder side but I slept like a log. Airconditioning is fine. Too cold at max level. The bathroom is where I need to give you some headsup. In our room, it is literally just the toilet bowl (water closet), then a showerhead, then the lavatory on the side. It is not exaggeration to say that you can't even do 1 step inside the bathroom. But even for us, it was just enough. Maybe if you are western guy, like more than 6 feet, 4XL kind of guy, you'll have a really hard time. They do provide us freshly washed towels each day. We have working hairdryer. They gave us 1 plug adaptor. I believe there is a refrigerator outside for the whole unit. I even saw some electric kettle. But we never really had the chance to use them. We were there in Chinese New Year, there are times where we waited for the elevator for more than 10 minutes. Maybe if you use it during the check in, check out time, a lot of traffic. For the Chunking Mansion, the ground floor is a place for a lot of stalls. Food stalls, small groceries, fruits, money exchange, etc. There are a lot of Indian/Pakistani, Filipino, and some Chinese. For our entire stay, we were not harassed or had any bad experience. Just say no to what they offer. The place is so safe even when I went home really late at night. The location is also great. From the airport, A21 bus is just in the corner. There are also several MTR exits nearby. Right across the street or in the corner block. There are a lot of 7/11, street food, food stalls around, ATM. Just the best location really. The room is also so clean. No cockroaches or bugs. The walls, floors, the bathroom are also clean. I can't say anything bad. Don't expect 5 stars but it is so much better than I expected.
